4 BAD Question on job interviewIt is legally protected to refuse talking about family plans, politics, military service and health conditions during the job interview in Finland. Jungle.fi described prohibited job interview questions.

Finnish law secures your privacy in your working life. The legal rule specifies that an employer is eligible to ask a job applicant about his/her qualifications and suitability to applied position. However, the following information might be kept completely secret:

1. Family relationships and baby dreams

Your potential employer does not have to know about your family relationships or baby dreams. Questions concerning pregnancy plans are considered to be discrimination based on gender basis. Gender discrimination relates to legislation on gender equality.

2. Political party or trade union activity

You do not necessarily have to share your political views, political party or trade union activity. On the other hand, political activity can be a recruiting ground, if the political views are relevant to the content of work. In practice, this work might relate to political party administration.

3. Compulsory military service

Employer is not allowed to ask the applicant about his/her military service experience, for example questions about military rank. Despite this advantage, many job seekers talk about their valuable experience in the military service, which they will be happy to give up looking for a job.

4. Health Issues

Health issues that do not directly affect the work or the treatment is not covered by the employer, might be kept in a secret. However, if a working ability is limited by your disease, you have to inform your employer about it.

“You have to prepare yourself for unpleasant questions before the interview,” says communication coach at Retorina Oy, Ina Virkki-Ukeleghe. Virkki-Ukeleghe calls attention to the body language during unpleasant situations throughout the job interview. Your body condition and voice pitch can be brought under control by learning to relax in advance. For example, right breathing techniques and physical exercises are a very helpful tool.

You can avoid answering unpleasant questions by switching the topic of discussion. If change of the topic is not possible, put the smile on your face and with relaxed and understanding tone tell the interviewer that this question is not really suitable to ask. “The most important thing is to smile. To smile is not offensive”, tells Virkki-Ukeleghe.
